Hi, just found this forum today although i've been on website quite a few times! We're wanting to keeping 2/3 chooks in our medium size garden. We have beds, flowers, veg, etc., but no grass. We're planning an ark style housing with run on a concrete base (approx 10' x 5') for most of time then allowed onto garden when we're there! Is a concrete base (although covered with bark chippings, sawdust, etc.) ok? any housing advice welcome!

Hi, I have a chicken house which is on top of a run and have a seperate run attached both of which are on concrete. I have about 3 inches of bark chipping in each and have had them this was for nearly a year without any problems at all.

Hi there
Yes, providing the concrete is covered so they can scratch around its quite Ok for them to be on concrete. Its also easily washed down too.
So as Anthony has already said, it sounds just fine. Have fun with your chickens

I recently built a coup for some quail that we bought at the Royal Welsh Small Holders and Garden Festival. The design would work equally well for 2 or three chickens. So I’ve posted the plans here for anyone who might want to make use of it. I’m sure the design can be improved on, but it might help as a starting point. www.byrdir.co.uk/index.php/2009/06/royal-welsh-small-holder-and-garden-festival/Gwion.
