Hi, I bought 3 rescued ex bats 6 weeks ago. Two have been laying for over 3 weeks now. One hasn't -she is the lowest ranking and most nervous hen (although ironically- the biggest) but her feathers came back the quickest. The other two have shiny red/pink crown but Big Birds is a dull pink. She was bullied for a few weeks by the 'Chief Bird' but all has settled down now. Is this normal for a hen not to lay?

It sounds like she either has put all her energy into feather production or she is possably laying soft shell eggs that are getting broken and eaten before you get a chance to see. There is a dedicated ex-battery forum on zetaboards who may be able to help further. Hope she improves

Hi Jinxy- you must have " Jinxed" Big Bird as she layed her first egg today at last ;D I think you were right about her putting her energy into her feathers as each hen has layed in order of how least their feathers have recovered. Within the six weeks I have had them the best layer still looks like an ex battery hen whilst Big Bird looks like she has been hand reared with all her fine plumage and fluffy bottom! Thanks for your insight
