Can anybody tell me what chicken lice actually look like? Size and colour? I need to know what to look out for with the spring weather upon us.

red mite is what you need to look out for and as the name suggests, they are red after feeding on the chickens blood. They tend to come out at night when the hens are roosting. If there is an infection of mites, you may notice your hens won't be as eager to go in their house at night. As it gets warmer you should dust the hens and house with anti-mite powder as a prevention. If you want to see what they look like, google it.

You can see lice on your hens when you part the feathers - especially near the tail, but they may be anywhere. They are a light brown colour and you can see them scurrying to the base of the feathers when they are exposed to light. They can't live if they are not on the bird. To keep on top of them apply louse powder - I usually apply from the base of the neck and sprinkle down the back and give a little rub in. About every six to eight weeks should do the trick. I also add louse powder to their dust bath area.
