I have had my 3 ex bats since March. Normally there is a bit of noise in the morning in the pen I have a galvanised pen with coop for night as they are eager to be fed (all food is stored away at night)and keen to be let out in the garden. However, the past few days they are waking at 5.30am and making loud fully fledged "chicken noises'. I live in a residential area and with the hot weather they can be heard loudly through open windows. I have been getting up at 6am to tend to them so they shut up. I am wondering if this is just a phase they are going through or do all hens cause such a racket every morning? Or will I have to start getting up at 5.30am so they dont disturb the neighbours?

Hi Oeuf
We had the same thing with our chooks, unfortunately they will be active from whenever it gets light so obviously nice and early in the summer! We got around the problem by blacking out the window and the top of the nest box with folded up black rubbish bags and it has worked a treat. Hope that helps and you manage to get a lie-in!

hey. i bought a hen that turned out to be a thingyeral and trust me nothing will stop him from crowing, not even keeping him locked in the dark. we tried for a few weeks to see how things went, but it will just get louder and more frequent throughout the day. we live in a built up area so had to rehome him.
