I have a question about breeding, preferably using a broody hen on some fertilised eggs.
Everywhere I read says that for 99% of chicken breeds, it takes almost exactly 21 days to hatch the eggs under a broody mother. Any eggs that go much more than a day past this are likely deformed or failed and will be deemed as lost. So what I am thinking is this ....
I would quite like to use some of my ladies for foster mothering, putting some fertilised eggs underneath them. If I successfully get one of my chickens broody and don't place any fertilised eggs under her until, let's say, she's been brooding for 7 days, will she assume that after 22 days (which will technically only be day 15 for my eggs) that they aren't going to hatch and then abandon the clutch?
Hope this makes sense

I hatch lots of eggs under broody hens and they do not know how long to sit for. This means that you can place fertile eggs under them after usually about 3 days and they have no problem sitting for the extra time. I also have seen somebody hatch goose eggs under a large broody and they take 32 days so this shows that hens sit until the eggs hatch and not for a set length of time. Happy Hatching, Errol
